Washington International Chorus concert May 4th 2013

he Washington International Chorus presents "Of Poets and Composers" in concert on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at The United Church, 20th and G Sts NW, Washington DC at 7:30 pm. Selections include poems by Thomas Campion, Shakespeare, Racine, Goethe, John Clare, F. Garcia Lorca, Louise Bogan, James Agee, and others. Composers who have set poems to music include Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, Alec Rowley, and Rene Clausen.

Reception to follow the concert in the church's social lounge. Suggested donations are $15 or more.

The Washington International Chorus is a non-auditioned, classical chorus that welcomes new members. We rehearse on Tuesdays from 7-9 pm at The United Church at 20th and G Sts NW in Washington DC. Lucia di Lammermoor at Strathmore August 12, 2012

Opera International's production of Lucia di Lammermoor will be performed at Strathmore on August 12th at 4 pm. It is the only performance of Donizetti's famous story of Lucia who, in spite of her love for Edguardo, is forced into marriage to save the family fortunes and the tragedy that results. Yingxi Shang is Edguardo and Jessica Stecklein is Lucia. Muriel Von Villas is Director and Ed Roberts the conductor.

Several members of the Washington International Chorus, a program of Amico Artists, Jenny Hosmer and Caroline Sparks, are in the Lucia chorus so come and support us.

Tickets may be purchased at the event. Prices range from $20-$50.

Malinee Peris, Amico Artists Board Member, to give piano concert July 12th

The George Washington Summer Piano Institute presents Malinee Peris in a solo piano concert July 12th at 7 pm at the United Church at 1920 G St NW (corner of 20th and G Sts) in Washington DC. The program, called laughing water, will feature the music of Debussy, Ravel, Liszt and Chopin. The concert is free and open to the public.

Professor Peris is an Advisory Board member of Amico Artists. We released a CD of her most recent recording in aid of breast cancer survivors, "My Journey From Darkness to Light with Chopin" in October 2010. which may be purchsed at www.amicoartists.com. The CD may be purchased as singles or in bulk to give to breast cancer survivors by clicking on the Support Us link on this website.

Ms. Peris, a well known concert pianist who is the Director of Keyboard Studies at GWU, has just returned from giving a concert in her native Sri Lanka where she holds the title of "Kala Keerthi", Sri Lanka's highest honor for the Arts and a lifetime achievement award from the Sri Lanka Foundation of America.

Ms. Peris trained at the Royal College of Music in London and gave her first solo public recital at the age of 12. She also studied with Henry Sztompka, Leon Fleisher, Earl Wilde, and Ilona Kabos. During her extensive career she has given recitals worldwide throughout Europe, Isreail, Australia, and the United States. Hungarian-born virtuoso Louis Kentner was her teacher and mentor for over 20 years. Professor Peris was featured as soloist at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York at a concert to mark the 22nd anniversary of Human Rights Day. She has given a series of lectures for Independent TV in Britain titled "Music as an International Language," performed frequently for the BBC and for Belgian Radio Three.

Professor Peris's recent recordings include Ravel and Debussy (2002), From Portugal to Brazil (2003), From Spain to Mexico (2005), and A Child's Garland of Music (2007). For more information go to www.malineeperis.com

Rehearsals resume on Jan. 10, 2012

The chorus began rehearsals again on January 10, 2012. Our rehearsals will focus on our spring concert in May so we are practicing opera choruses. If you have always wanted to sing opera, here's you chance. Auditions are not required - just come and sing. Rehearsals are held from 7-9 pm on Tuesdays at the United Church at the corner of 20th and G Sts NW. Nearest metros are Farragut West or Foggy Bottom.

Washington International Chorus concert Dec. 16, 2011

The Washington International Chorus presents its holiday concert Friday December 16th at the United Church at 1920 G St NW (corner of 20th and G Sts). Singers from the United Church's choir and the Bowie MD Unity Church of Light will join in singing holiday songs in Spanish, French, German, Yoruba, Latin and English. The featured work will be Navidad Nuestra by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez.

New chorus season begins September 6th

The Washington International Chorus begins its third season on September 6, 2011. If you would like to sing with the chorus, please come to our opening rehearsal at United Church (20th and G Sts NW) at 7 pm. This is a non-auditioned chorus so we welcome singers with a lot to a little experience.

Amico Artists will use the summer for planning our events for next season, both for the chorus as well as for other activities.

Concert for Peace Saturday May 21st

The Washington International Chorus will join the Unity of Light choir in Bowie MD for a concert of peace songs on Saturday May 21st at 1 pm. Selections range from Vivaldi, Mozart and Rossini to the modern era. The concert is free. Donations are always welcome. Children are welcome to attend.

Directions: Take Hwy 50 east from Washington DC and exit to Hwy 197 toward Bowie. At Hwy 450, take a right and in just about three blocks turn left on Moylan Dr. The concert will be held in the YMCA building on the right a few blocks down Moylan. Plenty of parking available.

Washington International Chorus at National Theatre April 4th

The Washington International Chorus sang two performances of "Songs of Peace" on April 4th at the National Theatre on Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington DC. Our conductor is Dimitar Nikolov and we will be joined by some of the choir members from Unity Church in Bowie Maryland.

The performance will be repeated on May 21st at 1 p.m. at the Unity Church of Light in Bowie Maryland. Admission is free. Donations are welcome.

Chopin CD for cancer survivors has arrived

Malinee Peris, a concert pianist who has had a long, successful career playing all over the world, has created a CD of Chopin's music. Ms. Peris, a cancer survivor herself, found that playing Chopin's music helped her through the difficult months of treatment for cancer. The new CD is now available through Amico Artists.

A Chopin expert and cancer survivor herself, her CD tells the story of how she played Chopin's music through her treatment and recovery from breast cancer as a way of reconfirming her commitment to living through her ordeal. Her goal is to use the CD as a way to encourage cancer patients and survivors to continue to engage in pursuits they are passionate about as a path toward recovery.

Our hope is that you will purchase a CD to give to someone you know who is a cancer survivor or who is undergoing cancer treatment. The retail price of a CD is $16.00 and may be ordered by clicking on the link to paypal below.

Organizations may donate to our effort by giving CD's to cancer patients and survivors. For each $100.00 donation, the organization or cancer center will receive 12 CDs to give to cancer patients.
